Background information

This was a prospective snapshot audit and retrospective analysis of ileostomy closure following anterior resection for rectal cancer.

The aim was to investigate time to ileostomy closure in the UK and identify reasons for delays.

A team of two trainees and a consultant was required from each participating centre to contribute to either/both study components:

  1. Retrospective arm: review records from a historical 12-month period to calculate time to closure and incidence of non-closure
  2. Prospective arm: collect data over a 3-month period from April 2018 on patients undergoing ileostomy closure
